Welcome to the Year of the Dragon

Year_of_the_dragon

Happy Lunar New Year everyone.

This year I didn’t get the chance to do some of the things that I wanted in time for New Years, but then I relized I had a second chance to do it for LNY (Lunar New Year). Another nice thing about living in Korea.

Here’s to the new year and to new begings. I hope that the Dragon treats you well.

Graduation

So next week will be the end of the school year, and the start of spring break. We have only been back at school a week since the end of winter vacation and I get almost another two weeks off for spring break. Yay! I have signed on for another year here and if they don’t decide to move me I will be at the same schools.

However again I will be getting some new teachers to work with. At the start of the new school year many Korean teachers are shuffled round to different schools. So I am losing a few friends to bigger schools, but if I am lucky my co-teacher from this year is trying to go to my city school so we might still be working together.

The strangest thing though, is that even though these teachers know they are moving, they don’t know where to. Most of them won’t find out which schools they will be working at until just before they have to start again on March 1st.

But my little school is getting three new male teachers and that means that for the first time since I have come to Korea the guys will out number the girls in the office. I’m still not sure if it will be a good thing but it should be interesting none the less.

Luna New Year in Korea - Seolnal

So last week was Luna New Year (설날) and here in Korea it is a big deal. Christmas here in Korea is nothing like at home. Like in Japan Christmas in Korea is ore of a date night where you hang out with your special someone and go see a movie or something.

But Luna New Year is family time. The holiday falls on the first new moon of the year and generally is a three day holiday. This year we were lucky enough to have it fall next to a weekend so for most people it was five days off, and a lot of big companies gave their workers the whole week.

Most people will travel back to their home town for the holidays. Their a lot of people will play traditional games like Yutnori (윷놀이), eat Tteokkook (떡국) and do a big bow (세배) to their elders to get Lucky Money (세뱃돈). This year I went back to my parents-in-law and I scored about $30 for my big bow. All in all it as been a pretty good holiday.

Happy Year of the Rabbit.
Welcome back to my re-launched blog. Hopefully this will be a lucky year for you all and I hope you enjoy what I post up here.
I have re-designed this blog, added a few new pages to make it a little more friendly, and will be linking in my ESL blog which I will also be working on this year.
So stick around and I hope that you enjoy some of the posts.
